Not only does Eastwood direct, but he also acts in this film. I thought that A Perfect World is a wonderful drama that is among Clint Eastwood's best. I believe that he is a terrific director and actor, and he's also one of my favorites actors. He was a legitmate murderous lunatic the entire time.I'm very biased towards Clint Eastwood films. This is the moment you realize that he is not a misunderstood man with bad luck caught up in the prison machine. If the boy had not gut shot him, there is little doubt that he would have murdered a man in front of his son, because that man had crossed some deep seated moral line that Costner had drawn in his heart. He ties up the man and enacts are bizarre dog and pony show, terrorizing all involved. Towards the end of the film, Costner takes umbridge with a man who housed and fed them for smacking his own son. Costner's character adopts a kind of surrogate father role to the boy, and seems to genuiinely enjoy interacting with him, yet the true motivations for keeping the kid is to use him as a human meat shield. You might say he killed him to cleanse the world of a pedophile, but hi creepiness toward the boy took place without him being there to see it. You could argue that it was in case he tipped the police off, but they had no shared plans or destination. Further along in the film, Costner murders his unarmed partner in a cornfield when it seemed to me that he could have simply driven off without him. Was it necessary to murder the man? There was no mention of any remorse, no indication that Costner was against the idea, nor that he did not willingly participate. But consider the body of the prison guard in their trunk. The guy is so awful that it makes Costner look valiant in contrast. Costner's character is paired up with a vile criminal out of necessity. What was interesting to me about it was the fact that I did not know that my expectations had been subverted until several days after the viewing. Serendipity! I've also recently watched the film.
